Geothermal heat pumps (also called
ground source heat pumps) circulate water through a system of
underground pipes. These are installed in either a horizontal
or vertical loop configuration. They can also be installed on
properties where there is close proximity to a pond or lake.
The heat pump can extract heat
or cold from this water and pumps it into your home as appropriate.
In the summer, the water temperature from the underground is
almost always colder than the outside temperature; in the winter,
it is almost always warmer. This makes the geothermal heat pump
the most efficient heating and cooling option available. Like
the air exchange heat pump, the geothermal heat pump contains
standard air conditioning equipment that will cool the home.
The benefits
to the homeowner are:
The highest level of energy efficiency
possible among all furnace/air conditioner/heat pump options
Drastically reduced energy bills
Energy rebates and reduced electric rates
are offered on geothermal heat pumps from most electric
utility
companies
